Autumn Best easily delivers a standout performance in Anna Kendrick’s first directorial outing, but Daniel Zovatto is also perfectly creepy as serial killer Rodney Alcala. The score and cinematography are impressive and engaging, and the writing is well-paced and character-driven.
I see good things ahead for Anna Kendrick’s directing career
I know this is LOOSELY based on the true story of Alcala’s crimes, but the writer(s) got a little more creative with the true story (the character “Laura” (Nicolette Robinson) never existed, Rodney was the number one bachelor, not a threesome, etc.) I could have used a little more background on him and how he became such a monster. All in all, it was a tense, interesting and rather frustrating look at one of the strangest serial killing cases of the last 50 years. No need to waste time endlessly scrolling—here’s the full lineup of new movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix this month.
