A group of current and former Amazon workers in Staten Island, New York City, challenge one of the largest corporations in the world in a unionization battle. I watched it at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. “Union” is an insightful, gritty, and frustrating documentary about the struggles Amazon workers face with unions and the conflicts and issues behind Amazon as a corporation. Filmmakers Stephen T. Maing and Brett Story deliver a strong, engaging story with good atmospheres and interesting conversations, and explore the characters and lives thoroughly with an open-minded perspective. It was very depressing to see the workers trying to make the best of their lives, but struggling due to the issues they encounter with Amazon and the union not being perfect. Especially with the recent events with Amazon laying off many employees, it is very disheartening to see the struggles and conflicts. The documentary is well presented with good sound design, structure, and good emotional cores explored throughout. Many of the participants provided honest realities of their situations and kept me engaged. There are a few slow-paced moments that I wish could have been better, but overall, it’s good to see pro-union cinema making a comeback again. Check out the full lineup for the 62nd New York Film Festival this fall.
